Origin

The Paithani takes its name from the town of Paithan in Maharashtra and is today woven mainly in Yeola. The Banarasi comes from Varanasi (Banaras) in Uttar Pradesh. Both traditions are centuries old.

Weaving Technique

This is the biggest difference. Paithani is famous for its tapestry weave, where coloured weft threads are interlocked by hand so the pallu and border motifs look clean on both sides — Paithani is essentially reversible in its motif areas. Banarasi typically uses a brocade technique with floated zari threads, creating a raised, richly textured surface, with loose threads visible on the reverse.

Motifs

Paithani: peacocks (mor), parrots (munia), lotus, coins and the iconic Bangdi Mor, usually concentrated on a bold border and pallu.
Banarasi: Mughal-inspired florals, jaal, buti and paisley (kalga and bel) spread across the entire body.

Look and Feel

Paithani is known for its vibrant, contrasting colours and a striking, oblique-square border, with an often plain or lightly buttaed body that lets the pallu shine. Banarasi tends to have all-over dense zari work and a heavier, more ornate feel across the whole saree.
